After Hours
Just released – “After Hours” a new album by Jeff Dyer and Bill Brennan.
Jeff Dyer and Bill Brennan have been exploring the lyrical simplicity of voice and piano for several years. Out of that exploration has come “After Hours”, an album of classic jazz standards, Brazilian bossa nova, and original music.
It was recorded in two sessions; accompanying them in the first session are their old friends Jim Vivian (bass), Mike Billard (drums) and Patrick Boyle (trumpet/flugelhorn). With these wonderful musicians Dyer and Brennan honour the songs of many great composers such as George Gershwin’s Our Love Is Here To Stay”, Guy Wood’s “My One And Only Love”, and Dori Caymi’s beautiful Brazilian Bossa Nova “O Cantador”. There is a sound and a sense of space to this ensemble that one can revel in.
In the second session, Dyer and Brennan are a simple duo, breathing new life into such tunes as Jerome Kern’s “All The Things You Are”, Alan Lerner’s On The Street Where You Live” and Cole Porter’s “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”.
On the album are five Jeff Dyer originals including “Time Is A Dragon”, Iona (a song about a Newfoundland ghost town), and “Hold On”.
Dyer’s voice is strong, clear and warm, yet showing a nuanced maturity not heard before. Brennan’s touch is as gentle as ever, with a percussive feel that is refreshing and delightful.
