The Kubasonics, arguably Newfoundland’s favourite Ukrainian band, are hosting the 3rd Annual “Malanka: A Ukrainian New Year Celebration” at the Ship Pub on Saturday, January 13, 2018, 9:00 pm. Malanka traditionally combines elements of Mummering and Mardi Gras, with a cast of costumed characters greeting the new year.
The Kubasonics have enjoyed an action-packed year. They released their latest CD “Kubfunland,” toured to Trinidad in the spring and 4 countries of eastern Europe in the summer and played festivals in Ottawa and Toronto. They capped things off with 3 MusicNL Awards (VOCM Group of the Year; Overcast Fan’s Choice Entertainer of the Year; Folk-Roots Artist of the Year) and were named to the short list for the 2017 Borealis Music Award.
The evening will begin at 9 p.m. with two sets of Ukrainian speed-folk music by The Kubasonics followed by a rocking set from the Mick Davis and His Skinny Jims. Included in the ticket price is a home-style borshch and perogy meal. Please note the early start time, with doors open at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $20.00, available in advance at The Ship, Fred’s Records and O’Brien’s Music.
