Local Musicians, Writers & Businesses Rally Around International Women's Day

What:    Songs of Freedom & Resistance Event

Where: The Rocket Room, Rocket Bakery & Fresh Food, 272 Water St., 3rd Floor

When:  Saturday, March 11, 2017.  Doors open at 7 PM with an 8 PM start.

Why:      This International Women's Day weekend serves as an opportunity to demonstrate modern feminist activism in support of reproductive rights, women's issues in general and other human rights issues.  "Women and their supporters are gathering on Saturday March 11 to show, through music and dance, that these issues matter," says organizer and musician, Sandy May.  "We want everyone to know that there are people, not just women, who are on high alert, ready to protect women's rights and those of minorities, immigrants and anyone whose human rights feel threatened."


About the Songs of Freedom & Resistance Event

Join a diverse group of St. John's finest artists for an inspiring night of music and prose at the Rocket Room, March 11 at 8PM. Host Elisabeth de Mariaffi will welcome writers Megan Coles and Andreae Callanan and a powerhouse array of musicians across many genres to share uplifting and provocative songs, poems, and stories, followed by an FAF (Feminist as F**k) dance party with DJ Slaylist.

 Musicians include Katie Baggs, Kelly McMichael, Jenina MacGillivray, Bryan Power, Steve Maloney, Mathew Hornell, Joanna Barker, Maggie Burton & Chris McGee, Megan Marshall, Ruth Lawrence and many more. Tickets are available in advance for a suggested donation of $15 (no one turned away for lack of funds). All proceeds will benefit our local chapter of Planned Parenthood. This family-friendly event has been generously sponsored by the St. John's International Women's Film Festival, Rocket Bakery, and Boogaloo Music.
