External Funding

SOCAN TRAVEL ASSISTANCE

Grants are provided to SOCAN composers, writers, and music publishers across all genres of music to assist with travel-related costs for career-building or career-defining activities in Canada or abroad. Priority for approval will be given to applications demonstrating the importance of the activity to the applicant’s career. Applicants may receive only one (1) Travel Assistance Grant per calendar year.

FACTOR - VIDEO

The Socan Video program contributes to the cost of producing music videos for eligible Canadian sound recordings by artists rated 2 and 3. A maximum of $20,000 in video funding is available per qualifying release per fiscal year, across all programs. This means that applications for video support within this program will diminish the amount that can be requested in the video component of any other program. The only component in this program is Video.

FACTOR - SPONSORSHIP

The Sponsorship program allows FACTOR to support worthy music-related projects and events that are looking for a smaller amount of support, or that do not quite fit other program mandates. New and genre-specific music festivals, broadcaster conferences, workshops, industry association events, and international showcases are examples of projects that FACTOR has been proud to support over the years. Extra consideration may be given to projects and events that largely benefit underserved communities, audiences and genres. These may include (for example) Northern, remote and rural communities; Indigenous peoples and Indigenous artists; Black artists and Artists of Colour; artists identifying as LGBTQ2A. Any Canadian person, company or organization with an appropriate project is eligible to apply. An Applicant Profile is not required.

FACTOR - SONGWRITERS WORKSHOP

The Songwriter’s Workshop Support program helps professional songwriters pay for the cost of attending domestic and international songwriting workshops and seminars on the craft and business of songwriting. Canadian professional songwriters can apply. Professional songwriters with an approved applicant profile can apply. A professional songwriter is defined as a Canadian songwriter with membership in a performing rights organization (e.g. SOCAN), and whose songs are primarily intended to be performed and/or recorded by someone other than the songwriter.

FACTOR - MARKETING & PROMOTION FOR NON FACTOR RECORDINGS

This program supports the marketing of commercially released full-length sound recordings that were not acquired or produced with FACTOR funding. The sound recording must have been commercially released and achieved a qualifying sales threshold or had a track charting on commercial radio. Artists may apply on their own behalf if they retain the exploitation rights to the sound recording. If a record label controls the exploitation rights to the sound recording, the record label must apply. Artist applicants must have an approved applicant profile. Record labels including MEC-supported companies must have a reviewed and rated applicant profile.
