MusicNL nominated artist Gene Phillips has been writing and performing his own songs all his life. While initially a drummer, he branched out to play guitar, bass and piano. He has taken private instruction in voice, drums, guitar and piano. In recent years he performed at venues such as the VOCM Happy Tree Concert at the Arts and Culture Centre Dec. 2015, Co-host at Open Mic at The Ship May 2017, Colliers Folk Festival July 2016 and various fundraisers.
Gene’s musical influences are diverse. As a child he was enamored with the local band The Fables and their traditional song Heave Away. In his teens it was Finger Eleven, Big Wreck, Johnny Cash, Tea Party, Collective Soul, Ron Hynes, Merle Haggard, Gordie Sampson, Foo Fighters and some Tenacious D. Currently, Gene spends his time in his studio and attending classes at the CNA Music Program: Performance, Business and Technology. He has co-written, recorded, engineered and produced songs in his home studio. He has started his own business, Gene Phillips’ Recording and Publishing and has embarked on his second album – Fade Away. He has released 2 singles – Bright Lights and When We Were Young. His first album East Grey resulted in a MusicNL nomination. Gene plays all instruments and sings all songs himself. He was featured on the popular 97.5 K-Rock Under the Influence World Album Premier show with Jlac in March 2018. He has recently been invited to be a guest on the Rogers Community Channel program NL Now to showcase his talents. He was featured on CBC radio’s First Listen with Jamie Fitzpatrick on June 3, 2018. He gets radio play on local, national and international radio stations. Gene is a member of Music NL and is anxious to share his new tunes with the province and the world at large.
