Maria Cherwick is a violinist, violist and fiddler versed in many styles and traditions. Originally from the Canadian Prairies, Maria's studies and career have brought her east to St. John's Newfoundland, where she is currently based.
Maria completed a Masters of Music at Memorial University in 2017, and taught as a sessional instructor and held leadership roles with the MUN Chamber Orchestra. Prior to this, Maria completed her Bachelor of Music at Brandon University in 2014. During this time, she had the opportunity to play a solo with the Brandon University Orchestra, perform solo and chamber music recitals, and appear at the Brandon University and Winnipeg Symphony New Music Festivals.
Maria is currently a member of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, the Strong Harbour Strings Collective, and Watershed Ensemble in St. John's. Previously, Maria performed, toured, and held leadership positions with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, National Academy Orchestra of Canada, Brandon University Orchestra, and Edmonton Youth Orchestra.
Maria has toured extensively both nationally and throughout Europe with her award winning Ukrainian speed-folk band The Kubasonics. She is highly sought after as a fiddle player capable of many styles, including bluegrass, old time, celtic and jazz, to name a few. She performs regularly with countless groups in Newfoundland, including The Old Contemporaries, Double Denim, Flower Hill, The Forgotten Bouzouki, and many more, and was named the 2018 MusicNL Side Musician of the Year. Most recently, she completed a tour of Western Canada as the featured guest soloist with the Canadian Bandurist Capella.
When she isn't performing, Maria teaches violin and viola lessons privately and for a non-profit community program called Strong Harbour Strings. She also enjoys trying out new instruments (most recently cello and clawhammer banjo) and singing, cooking Ukrainian food, and taking care of her cat and plants.
