Facebook Event

St. John’s, NL, Canada – July 29, 2020:  MusicNL and Equinor are proud to present this year’s NewFound Talent Contest as a part of the Newfoundland & Labrador Folk Festival: 2020 Digital Edition.

Young musicians aged 19 and under will perform for a professional panel of judges consisting of past MusicNL award winning artists Nick Earle, Melanie O’Brien, and Mary Barry. The contest will be hosted by Don-E Coady of DC Design House and pre-recorded on August 25th at the Canadian AV Warehouse (22 Pearl Place, St. John’s).

The contest videos will be available for viewing MusicNL’s YouTube channel, website, and Facebook page on September 2. The 1st place winner’s performance will premiere on the Newfoundland and Labrador Folks Arts Society website on Thursday, September 3rd as part of the Digital Festival’s weekly episodes.

The NewFound Talent Contest is designed to discover, develop, encourage, and showcase young entertainers. The competition offers professional development prizes valued at over $6,000 to aid talented young performers to help enhance their songwriting, performing and music business skills. The first-place winner will also have their performance featured on the festival’s closing night with some of the world’s finest folk musicians.

“Carrying on this year’s NewFound Talent Contest is vitally important to aspiring young musicians in the province. We look forward to this event every year and are thrilled to be able to offer the program despite COVID-19”, says MusicNL Programs & Operations Manager Sherri Breen. “Newfoundland & Labrador is home to so many talented youth and this helps set up industry exposure and performance opportunities as is the case with past winners Bridget & Dahlia, Nick Earle, and Rachel Cousins.”

The NewFound Talent Contest is open to members of MusicNL as well as non-members and those of the general public. Individuals interested in applying for the contest can do so by completing the fill-able PDF application form here:
